When importing dogs to Japan, specific procedures must be followed to prevent rabies and other diseases. Below are the main steps:
1. Microchip:
The dog must have a microchip that meets ISO standards 11784 or 11785.
2. Rabies Vaccinations:
The dog must receive two rabies vaccinations after being at least 91 days old. The second vaccination must be given at least 30 days after the first. These vaccinations must be done after the microchip is implanted.
3. Blood Test:
At least 30 days after the second rabies vaccination, a blood sample must be taken and tested for rabies antibodies at a designated laboratory. The antibody level must be at least 0.5 IU/ml.
4. Waiting Period:
The dog must wait at least 180 days from the date the blood sample is taken before it can enter Japan. During this period, the dog must remain outside of Japan.
5. Submission of Documents:
At least 40 days before arrival, submit an "Import Application" to the Animal Quarantine Service. The application should include details about the dog, the expected arrival date, and the place of entry.
6. Quarantine Upon Arrival:
Upon arrival in Japan, the dog will undergo inspection at a designated quarantine station. Once the inspection is complete and there are no issues, the dog will be allowed to enter Japan.

- Some of these procedures may be waived for imports from certain countries or regions.
